Appointments Update MAY 2016

Demand on GP services has substantially increased whilst funding from the NHS for GP surgeries has decreased. Although our patient list size is fairly stable, the demand for appointments, particularly same day appointments, has increased disproportionately. This is a national issue which is being experienced by many surgeries across the country and does not just relate to Deal Tree Health Centre.

To help address the demand from patients for urgent on the day assessment and to reduce the waiting times for routine GP appointments, we will be implementing a change to the appointments system at the end of this month. To achieve this, we have employed two Nurse Practitioners who are also prescribers, with many years’ experience working in walk-in centres, out of hours services and GP surgeries.

All requests for on the day appointments will be booked with a Nurse Practitioner for clinical assessment and in most cases treatment. They will be able to examine, diagnose, prescribe and arrange blood tests, x-rays, etc. Should the problem in the opinion of the Nurse Practitioner require the patient to be seen by a doctor, they will book the appointment according to clinical need.

This will release the current on the day appointments with doctors to be available for pre-booking by patients, which in turn should reduce the current waiting time for GP routine appointments.

All pre-bookable doctor appointments are available on-line, by telephone, or face to face with reception. To help reduce the number of calls at peak times, it would be helpful if patients requesting routine appointments could call mid-morning onwards, thereby allowing patients who need on the day assessments to be able to access reception more quickly.

We feel the new system will help to improve the availability of appointments and reassure patients that we are constantly trying to improve our service, but also help to explain the difficulties general practice currently faces.

From September Dr Ranitha Dayalakumar will be joining the Practice as a new partner and  Dr Butler’s patients will be transferred to her care.
